The National Trailer Yacht Championships incorporating the NZTYA New Zealand Championships were hosted by Lake Taupo Yacht Club Friday – Sunday of Easter. A small fleet of 10 boats struggled in light winds on Friday and most of Saturday before a gentle 10 knot westerly kicked in late in the day, enabling a 3rd race to be completed. Sunday brought a much more challenging 25 – 30 knots from the east, for the final 3 races.
While conditions were challenging, for doifferent reasons, over the course of the regatta, race Officer Celia Carson did a great job in completing 6 out of the scheduled 8 races. Given the conditions on the last day, calling a halt to racing before the last race was welcomed by all the crews.
Wellington Ross 650 Hot Line skippered by Luke O’Connell is the 2022 National Trailer Yacht Champion and also claimed the trifecta of Line and Ratings honours in B Division of the NZTYA Champs.
A Division Line honours went to No Remorse – an Elliott 7.8 skippered by Chris Johnston and Ratings to The Bill – a Williams 7 skippered by Alan Simpson (both boats from Taupo)”
